About

Funk suggests more than a sound. It implies a whole lot of attitude, slick swagger, and serious soul. You feel it just as much as you hear it. The Funklabb cooks up music in this spirit. The Brooklyn-based duo of producers and songwriters – Ed Lawson and Wes Davis uncork a timeless groove ignited by fresh fire. After crafting music behind the scenes for everyone from legends such as The Notorious B.I.G. and Will Smith to R&B favorites Sharissa and Allure, The Funklabb step into the spotlight with a series of 2021 independent singles.

“Funk goes beyond music,” affirms Ed. “It’s the nastiness in a song—that dirt. We definitely try to embody that. At the same time, we’re always in the Labb creating. We’ve been in the record business for quite some time, but we’ve finally decided to put ourselves out there now.”

Ed and Wes first met way back in 1994 when Wes’s wife introduced them. The duo hit it off and started meeting up daily to write, record, and produce music in Ed’s basement studio. They famously cut demos for none other than The Notorious B.I.G. and Will Smith. Among dozens of credits, the pair produced “Put Down That Phone” for Sharissa and worked with Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, Shelene Thomas, Mariah Carey’s girl group Allure, and more. Their collaboration evolved into an artist development hub with various artists leaning on their expertise, wisdom, guidance, and, of course, studio prowess.
